The late former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, will be laid to rest on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. His remains are expected to arrive at noon, with burial prayers and final rites scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda confirmed the funeral details during a press conference on Monday in Katsina, following consultations with Buhari’s family and close associates in London.
President Buhari passed away on Sunday in a London hospital after a prolonged illness, prompting an outpouring of condolences and tributes from across Nigeria’s political, religious, and ethnic spectrum.
Governor Radda, visibly emotional, described the late president as a “national icon”, noting that his contributions to Nigeria’s political history would not be forgotten.
“We pray Almighty Allah grants him eternal rest and admits him into Aljannatul Firdaus,” Radda said.
“On behalf of the government and people of Katsina State, we extend our deepest sympathies to the Buhari family, to all Nigerians, and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over this profound loss. May Allah give us the strength to bear it.”
He also noted that the Katsina State Government is working closely with federal authorities and the Buhari family to ensure a dignified and honourable farewell for the former leader.
Muhammadu Buhari, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics for over four decades, first served as military Head of State from 1983 to 1985. He later returned to lead the country as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. Known for his austere lifestyle and firm stance against corruption, Buhari left a lasting imprint on Nigeria’s governance and public life.
Dignitaries, government officials, diplomats, and political leaders from within and outside Nigeria are expected to attend the burial to pay their final respects.
