Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies At 82

Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, is dead. He passed away on Sunday at the age of 82.

According to a statement released by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari died in a clinic in London, United Kingdom.

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Buhari, who was born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023. Prior to that, he ruled as a military head of state between 1983 and 1985 following a coup.

Renowned for his strong anti-corruption stance and austere leadership style, Buhari was widely regarded among his military peers as a disciplined and principled officer.

His passing marks the end of an era for Nigeria’s political and military history. Further details regarding burial arrangements and official national mourning are expected from the presidency.
