Sokoto State governor Ahmad Aliyu has congratulated his Edo State counterpart, Governor Monday Okpebholo, on his affirmation by the Supreme Court as the duly elected Governor of Edo State.
In a statement issued by his Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, on Friday, Aliyu described the apex court’s verdict as a triumph for democracy and a reaffirmation of the independence of the Nigerian judiciary.
The Supreme Court, on Thursday, dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Asue Ighodalo, challenging the outcome of the 2024 governorship election in Edo State, citing a lack of merit.
Aliyu noted that the ruling was not just a victory for Governor Okpebholo and the All Progressives Congress but for all Nigerians who believe in the sanctity of the ballot and the rule of law.
“On behalf of the good people of Sokoto State, I congratulate my colleague and brother, Governor Monday Okpebholo, on this well-deserved victory. This is a victory for the entire APC family and for all well-meaning Nigerians”, Aliyu stated.
He further urged Okpebholo to remain focused on delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of Edo State, assuring him of continued support and solidarity from the APC governors’ forum.
Aliyu concluded by wishing Okpebholo a successful and impactful tenure in office.
