The Anambra State Police Command has affirmed its readiness to combat cultism and other criminal activities within the state.
Commissioner of Police Mr. Ikioye Orutugu made this statement during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Awka.
Describing cultism as an offshoot of religion, Orutugu explained that “anything involving initiation, whether in a church or shrine, can be considered a cult.” He further noted that cultism is often exploited as a means of revenge, gaining social status, or obtaining leverage over rivals.
The police command is working closely with vigilante groups and other sister agencies to curb criminal activities across Anambra. Orutugu acknowledged the evolving nature of crime in the state, emphasizing the need for modern approaches to tackle these challenges.
“Crime will never completely disappear, but we are committed to doing our best. Since taking charge, my team and I have been focused on addressing crime as it evolves, aligning our efforts with the current Inspector-General’s primary policing strategy,” he said.
To enhance cooperation and professionalism, the command has initiated training programs for state vigilante operatives on fundamental human rights, public relations, and inter-agency collaboration.
“These vigilante groups are state organs and must engage respectfully, professionally, and ethically with the public and other agencies. The training has already begun, and we plan to involve the media in future sessions,” Orutugu added.
He praised Anambra’s history of peace and the hardworking nature of its residents, stressing that education and public enlightenment remain vital to advancing the state and the nation as a whole.
