The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has issued a warning to lawful permanent residents, stating that individuals with past criminal records may face revocation of their green cards and removal from the United States.
The agency made this announcement on Tuesday in a public notice directed at green card holders, highlighting several of its enforcement policies. CBP emphasized its mission of “protecting the American people, safeguarding our borders, and enhancing the nation’s economic security.”
In a firm message, the agency stated, “Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal history does not make you an upstanding lawful permanent resident.”
CBP further reiterated that lawful permanent residency is not an entitlement but a conditional privilege. “Possessing a green card is a privilege, not a right.
“Under our nation’s laws, our government has the authority to revoke your green card if our laws are broken and abused.
“In addition to immigration removal proceedings, lawful permanent residents presenting at a U.S. port of entry with previous criminal convictions may be subject to mandatory detention.”
The announcement serves as a caution to permanent residents that any previous criminal offenses, even after years of residence, could trigger serious immigration consequences, including detention and deportation.
