Former Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has officially resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Malami announced his defection on Wednesday in a strongly worded statement titled “To the Good People of Kebbi and Fellow Nigerians”, released via his verified social media handle. He said his decision followed “wide consultations and deep personal reflection,” stressing that it was motivated not by personal ambition or grudges, but by a deep concern for the deteriorating state of the nation.
“Nigeria is bleeding. Insecurity has taken over our homes, especially in the North. Banditry, kidnappings, and terrorism have become part of our lives, while the government prioritises politics over the safety of its citizens,” Malami declared.
He further cited the country’s worsening economic woes, lamenting that basic food prices have tripled, jobs are vanishing, and hope is fading among the youth.
Malami accused the APC-led government of abandoning good governance and replacing merit with political patronage.
“Governance has been abandoned. Appointments, projects, and policies are now guided by political loyalty, not national interest. I cannot remain part of a system that watches in silence as Nigerians suffer and die,” he stated.
Explaining his decision to join the ADC, Malami said the party represents the ideals of “justice, inclusion, competence, and national renewal,” adding that it offers a platform to help rescue Nigeria from its current decline.
“I believe that through this coalition, and with the support of Nigerians, we can create a better future for our beloved nation,” he added.
He also pledged continued loyalty to the people of Kebbi State, assuring them that his new political alignment would better amplify their voices and protect their interests.
Malami’s move comes amid a shifting political landscape in the country. Just hours before his announcement, a newly formed opposition coalition convened at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, where the ADC was formally adopted as the platform to challenge the APC in 2027.
The coalition unveiled former Senate President David Mark as interim national chairman and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola as interim secretary, following the resignation of longtime ADC leader Ralph Nwosu.
Notable figures present at the meeting included Atiku Abubakar (PDP), Peter Obi (Labour Party), Nasir El-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, Dele Momodu, Senator Ireti Kingibe, and other leaders from the PDP, SDP, and LP.
Following the recent defection of three PDP senators led by Adamu Aliero to the APC, Malami’s switch to the ADC positions him as one of the most prominent opposition figures in Kebbi State and a critical player in the unfolding national political realignment.
