Paris Saint-Germain and Botafogo have booked their places in the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup following a dramatic final round of group-stage matches played simultaneously on Monday.
PSG sealed their qualification with a 2-0 win over Major League Soccer champions Seattle Sounders, finishing the group with six points.
In the other group match, Atletico Madrid edged Botafogo 1-0, also ending the group stage on six points. However, despite winning two of their three games, Atletico were eliminated due to inferior goal difference.
All three teams—PSG, Botafogo, and Atletico Madrid—finished with six points, but Atletico’s heavy 4-0 loss to PSG earlier in the group proved decisive. Their goal difference of -1 fell short of PSG’s +4 and Botafogo’s +1, resulting in an early exit for the Spanish side.
As a result, PSG top the group, while Botafogo join them in the knockout stage. Atletico Madrid’s campaign ends abruptly despite a strong finish.
Tournament Format and Upcoming Fixtures
Under the revamped format, the top two teams from each of the eight groups advance to the Round of 16, scheduled for 28 June to 1 July.
The quarter-finals will follow on 4 and 5 July, with semi-finals on 8 and 9 July. The tournament will conclude with the final on 13 July at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
