António Guterres, the secretary-general of the United Nations, has strongly denounced the recent wave of violence that killed many civilians over the weekend in Benue State, North Central Nigeria.
According to media reports, scores of people were killed—many in their sleep—during a series of brutal attacks on the village of Yelewata. The assaults have also left several residents displaced.
Speaking on behalf of the Secretary-General, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said the world body is closely following developments.
“We’re monitoring the situation. The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope that those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended,” Haq stated.
President Bola Tinubu has also condemned the attacks, calling on both local leaders and residents to embrace peace, unity, and mutual understanding in the wake of the tragedy.
As part of efforts to address the longstanding conflict in the region, President Tinubu is scheduled to visit Benue State on Wednesday. During his visit, he will hold talks with key stakeholders—including traditional rulers, political leaders, religious figures, community elders, and youth groups—to explore lasting solutions to the crisis.
The president expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to all those affected by the violence.
