The Russian Federation has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria and exploring new dimensions in their bilateral relationship.
This was disclosed by Ambassador Andrey Podelyshev, Russia’s envoy to Nigeria, during a reception held in Abuja on Wednesday to celebrate Russia’s national holiday, “Russia Day.”
Celebrated every year on June 12, Russia Day is a moment for national reflection—honoring the past, embracing the present, and looking optimistically to the future.
In his remarks, Podelyshev underscored Russia’s firm stance on a global order rooted in mutual respect, sovereignty, and cultural identity. He stated that Russia advocates for each country’s right to chart its development course independently.
Highlighting the enduring relationship between Russia and Africa, he noted, “We do not impose conditions, interfere in internal affairs, or dictate models of development.
“We support honest and mutually beneficial dialogue and equal partnership.”
The ambassador acknowledged Nigeria’s influential role across the African continent, both in its historical leadership and humanitarian engagements.
“Thousands of Nigerians have studied in Russian universities, fostering a foundation of trust that supports growing cooperation in science, energy, defense, and agriculture.
“We highly value the openness of our Nigerian partners, constructive dialogue, and shared focus on tangible outcomes,” Podelyshev added.
Looking ahead, he expressed optimism for continued progress, saying, “We firmly believe that the potential of Russia-Nigeria cooperation is far from exhausted, with new horizons, joint projects, and growth opportunities ahead.”
Russia, known as the world’s largest country geographically, stretches across two continents and 11 time zones. It is celebrated for its cultural richness, breathtaking landscapes, and globally recognized landmarks.
