Abia State’s celebrated shot put champion, Kalu Eke Onwuka, popularly known as Scorpion, has made a triumphant return to Umuahia after clinching gold at the 2025 National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.
He was received with admiration as fans and sports enthusiasts hailed his impressive comeback to the national stage.
Speaking to ABN TV shortly after his arrival, Scorpion expressed gratitude to those who stood by him during his journey back to form. “I am back and happy to make Abia proud. I want to thank our visionary governor, Dr. Alex Otti, for his support and all my fans that believe in me,” he said.

However, the athlete used the moment to appeal directly to the state government for financial support and access to modern training facilities, saying they are crucial for his continued success in national and international competitions. “My name is everywhere in Abia and Nigeria because the kind of sport I do is very hard—Track and Field events. I personally need financial support and good facilities to train and push harder,” he stated.
Scorpion reassured his fans of his renewed commitment, declaring, “I’m fully back for the business. I need your support, and I promise to bring more medals for Abia State.”
His gold medal, won with a commanding throw of 16.90 meters, not only added to Abia’s medal tally but also reignited optimism in the state’s sporting sector. As a symbol of resilience, Scorpion’s journey continues to inspire upcoming athletes across the state.
