At least 81 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since early Monday, according to medical sources cited by Al Jazeera. Of that number, 53 were reported killed in Gaza City alone.
The continued bombardment comes amid conflicting signals from Hamas and the United States over a potential ceasefire deal. Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Washington, DC reported that “very different messages” are emerging from both parties, even as some reports suggest that Hamas has agreed to a ceasefire proposal put forward by the U.S.
Meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to deteriorate. A spokesperson for the World Health Organization (WHO) described the situation as dire, stating that “everyone is suffering” as hospitals run out of supplies necessary to treat both chronic illnesses and “horrific” war injuries. The spokesperson added that Israeli restrictions on humanitarian aid are exacerbating the crisis.
According to the Gaza Health Ministry, Israel’s military campaign has killed at least 53,977 Palestinians and wounded 122,966 since October 2023. The Government Media Office in Gaza has revised the death toll to more than 61,700, noting that thousands of people remain missing under rubble and are presumed dead.
The conflict began following the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which an estimated 1,139 people were killed and more than 200 others taken hostage.
International calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian access continue to grow, as the death toll and humanitarian suffering rise on both sides of the conflict.
