The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on Nigerians to refrain from condemning former militant leader and Niger Delta chieftain, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, over an alleged case of naira abuse.
This comes after a video from Tompolo’s 54th birthday celebration went viral, showing a man spraying ₦1,000 notes as Tompolo danced, prompting public outcry and accusations of selective law enforcement by the EFCC.
In response, Olukoyede, speaking in an interview with TVC on Sunday, confirmed that Tompolo has been formally invited for questioning. He emphasized that no individual is above the law but stressed that Tompolo remains innocent until proven otherwise.
“Nobody should condemn Tompolo at this point. It is still just an allegation,” Olukoyede stated.
“We have invited him, and the video is currently undergoing forensic analysis. In this digital age, videos can be manipulated, so we must be cautious.”
He further explained that the EFCC is committed to due process and ensuring every citizen receives fair treatment under the law.
“Until the investigation is concluded, we cannot determine guilt. Every Nigerian deserves a fair hearing and the benefit of the doubt,” he added.
The development has sparked broader discussions around public accountability, fairness in law enforcement, and the integrity of digital evidence in high-profile cases.
