99 Indonesian Hajj Pilgrims Affected With Pneumonia, One Reportedly Dead — Ministry

A total of 99 Indonesian hajj pilgrims have been diagnosed with pneumonia while in Saudi Arabia, with one fatality reported, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Health on Thursday.

The affected pilgrims are currently undergoing intensive treatment at hospitals in Mecca and Medina, the ministry confirmed.

“The rise in pneumonia cases among our hajj pilgrims needs careful attention because it can get worse if not treated fast and correctly,” said Liliek Susilo, Head of the Hajj Health Centre at the ministry.

Susilo highlighted several risk factors contributing to the spike in pneumonia cases, including extreme temperatures reaching up to 47°C, fatigue from the demanding pilgrimage schedule, overcrowded environments, and pre-existing medical conditions.

To mitigate further cases, she urged pilgrims to take preventive measures by maintaining hygiene and managing their health carefully.

She advised pilgrims to “wear masks, wash their hands, drink enough water, and take their medicines regularly if they have health issues.”

Susilo also stressed the importance of preserving energy, avoiding smoking, and reporting any signs of illness promptly to health workers, emphasizing that early detection and treatment are key to ensuring a safe and smooth pilgrimage experience.
