Minister of Works David Umahi took a swipe at the Labour Party and its supporters—primarily followers of the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi—during the ministerial press briefing held on Friday in Abuja.
While concluding his presentation on the performance of the Ministry of Works, Umahi appeared to make a veiled reference to the political opposition, stating, “I don’t want to be disobedient or be a member of the Labour Party that are very disobedient; I want to commend my Minister of State, Works. My permanent secretary and all the directors. But greater commendation goes to Mr. President.”
Umahi’s remark was seemingly aimed at the “Obidients”, a nickname commonly associated with Peter Obi’s supporters, who are known for their vocal presence on social media and their criticism of the current administration.
Earlier in his presentation, Umahi lauded President Bola Tinubu for initiating the Sokoto-Badagry road project, which he said had its roots in a vision conceived nearly five decades ago by former President Shehu Shagari.
“The good news is the Sokoto-Badagry. This was a dream of the Shagari administration about 47 years back. And it was supposed to be Badagry-Sokoto, but a very detribalized president directed us to change it to Sokoto-Badagry,” Umahi said.
He added that such an ambitious undertaking could only be pursued by a leader with “great courage and the power of dreams”.
The former Governor of Ebonyi State also praised Tinubu’s overall performance since taking office in May 2023, commending his leadership and commitment to infrastructure development.
