Governor Zulum Set To Close Muna IDP Camp in Maiduguri

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has announced plans to shut down the Muna Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri in the coming weeks.

The governor made the announcement during a surprise early-morning visit to the camp on Monday, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to phasing out all formal IDP camps within Maiduguri and its surrounding areas.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Muna camp, which was established during the peak of the humanitarian crisis in Borno, currently shelters around 10,000 displaced individuals. However, Zulum revealed that approximately 75 percent of the camp’s residents have already been successfully resettled.

He assured the remaining residents that the government will provide necessary support to help them rebuild their livelihoods as they return to their home communities.

The governor emphasized that the planned closure of Muna camp represents another key milestone in the state’s shift from emergency relief efforts to long-term recovery and resettlement initiatives.

During his first term, Zulum pledged to close all IDP camps in Maiduguri. So far, his administration has shut down more than 12 of them, making significant progress toward that goal. (NAN)
