Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway To Be Completed January 2026 — Minister Umahi

The much-anticipated Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be completed by January 2026, Minister of Works Senator Dave Umahi, announced on Wednesday during an inspection tour of the project site.

Speaking to journalists, Umahi revealed that over 70% of the massive infrastructure project has already been completed, despite the contractor receiving less than 70% of the allocated funds. He commended Hitech Construction Company for its dedication and technical excellence, describing the road as “exceptionally well-designed.”

“This project is over 70 percent done, and the contractor has not been paid up to 70 percent. That shows true commitment to nation-building,” Umahi said.

According to him, a 20km stretch of the road from Ahmadu Bello Way in Lagos is expected to be completed by May, with indications that the target may be exceeded.

The minister also disclosed that lands along the highway corridor have been acquired for future development projects, including tourism, industrial zones, factories, and housing estates. He assured Nigerians that the road architecture would support economic growth and enhance connectivity.

Umahi praised the road’s engineering quality, noting that the concrete thickness was even above specification. “It was designed for 275mm thickness, but what they’re delivering is 280mm,” he said.

He also emphasized the need for proper access controls, warning against unregulated entry points by motorists. “This is a superhighway. People can’t just enter it from their houses. We need flyovers and interchanges to avoid gridlock.”

The minister further noted that the project’s financial promoters, Dutch Bank and the Development Bank of Southern Africa, were satisfied with the quality and progress of the work.
