A prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Chief Kelvin Jombo Onumah, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident that occurred on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, in Amaekpu, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.
The fatal crash, which involved a speeding trailer, claimed the lives of a motorcycle operator and a schoolboy, both of whom were the only sons of their respective families.
Describing the incident as a devastating loss, Onumah extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, stating that words alone could not fully capture the pain caused by the tragedy.
“This is not just a loss for their families but for all of Ohafia. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families during this difficult time,” he said.
In his statement, Onumah called on the Abia State Government and relevant authorities to take immediate steps to improve road safety along the Ohafia-Arochukwu Expressway. He stressed the urgent need for the installation of speed bumps and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent further accidents.
“The reckless speeding on this road has continued to claim innocent lives. I strongly urge the government to implement necessary safety measures to protect road users,” he added.
Following the tragic incident, angry youths in Amaekpu set the trailer ablaze in protest before the intervention of the community’s President General restored calm. Security operatives, including the Nigerian Army, have since taken control of the situation to prevent further unrest.
While acknowledging the community’s anger and grief, Onumah appealed for calm, urging residents to allow the authorities to handle the situation lawfully.
“As painful as this loss is, we must seek justice through peaceful and legal means. Violence will not bring back our loved ones,” he advised.
He concluded his statement by praying for the peaceful repose of the departed souls and strength for their families to bear the irreplaceable loss.
This tragic accident has once again highlighted the urgent need for road safety reforms to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
