The Abia State Government has reacted to statements and publications regarding the trial of some civil servants recently arrested for alleged pension fraud.
In a press release signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the government clarified its position on the case, dismissing claims of persecution and political bias.
According to the statement, while some individuals have made genuine appeals for leniency, others have resorted to blackmail and sectional incitement. The government, however, insists that it is focused on governance and has no interest in persecuting any citizen.
The release further outlined key points on the matter:
1. The accused individuals were lawfully arrested, detained, and arraigned before a Federal High Court, where their pleas were taken and a ruling on their bail application is pending.
2. The ongoing strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) did not affect the case, as pension fraud falls under federal jurisdiction.
3. While the government acknowledges the need for fairness, it emphasized that the alleged victims of the fraud also deserve justice.
4. The accused will have the opportunity to prove their innocence in court, and their legal representatives are free to apply for bail on health grounds where necessary.
The government reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that due process is followed, while also protecting the rights of all Abians.
