Hon. Uko Ndukwe Nkole, the former member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the 8th and 9th National Assembly, has expressed his unwavering support for the concept of a shadow government, emphasizing its significance in enhancing democratic governance and accountability.
In an exclusive interview with ABN TV, Hon. Nkole described the shadow government as a necessary tool for keeping the government in power accountable, ensuring that it remains focused on delivering its promises to the people.
“The job of the opposition is not to clap for the government in power but to act as a check on its activities,” Hon. Nkole asserted. He highlighted the opposition’s critical role in a democracy, stating that without it, democracy would lose its essence.

Drawing comparisons with historical instances, Hon. Nkole noted how civil societies, such as NADECO, held military regimes accountable. “Even during military rule, opposition forces ensured accountability. In a democracy, a shadow government serves the same purpose by mirroring the ruling government and pointing out areas for improvement,” he said.
Hon. Nkole urged the adoption of shadow governments at all levels, including states and grassroots, as a means of fostering transparency and accountability. He explained that shadow commissioners and other shadow officials could provide constructive critiques of government policies and projects, leading to improved governance outcomes.
“When someone becomes afraid of their shadow, then there is something wrong,” Hon. Nkole remarked. He advised the government to embrace the concept of a shadow government rather than perceiving it as a threat.
Hon. Nkole cautioned against what he described as a tendency by some governments to focus on countering opposition rather than addressing governance challenges. “We advise the government to stop chasing shadows and focus on fulfilling its promises. A shadow government is not about seizing power; it’s about ensuring that governance is effective and beneficial to the people,” he said.
Hon. Nkole also called on law enforcement agencies to uphold democratic principles and avoid suppressing opposition voices. He emphasized that establishing a shadow government is entirely constitutional and should be supported as part of a vibrant democratic system.
While endorsing the shadow government initiative, Hon. Nkole commended the current administration for its achievements in infrastructure, particularly the completion of the Arochukwu-Ohafia road project. “This road is a critical link for our people and a project my own PDP administration could not complete. I commend the governor for this achievement,” he stated.
He further noted that shadow officials, such as a shadow commissioner for works, could contribute to identifying areas for improvement in projects like road construction, ensuring that public funds are well-utilized.
Hon. Nkole’s endorsement of the shadow government concept underscores his belief in the importance of transparency, accountability, and constructive opposition in a democracy. His remarks serve as a call to action for leaders at all levels to prioritize governance and development over political distractions, ensuring that democracy remains a tool for the betterment of society.
