The ruling Labour Party in Abia State has lost control of the local government areas to the relatively unknown Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

The ZLP swept an impressive 15 out of 17 Local Government Areas in the November 2nd council poll, while the Young Progressives Party (YPP) clinched the remaining two LGAs – Ugwunagbo and Osisioma Ngwa.

Prof. Chima George, Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission, announced the results on Saturday night at the ABSIEC headquarters in Umuahia.

He expressed pride in the commission’s ability to conduct a peaceful election, despite the challenges faced.

“The election was generally peaceful, although voter apathy was a concern,” George noted. “We have fulfilled the duty we were inaugurated on 5th September to carry out. It wasn’t an easy task, but we went beyond and above to raise awareness about the election across the state.”

This development comes as a surprise, especially considering Governor Alex Otti’s recent affirmation by the Supreme Court.

The Labour Party’s loss may be attributed to various factors, including voter apathy and the party’s internal dynamics.

The implications of this election result are yet to be fully understood, but it’s clear that the political landscape in Abia State has undergone a significant shift.
