Barrister Sani Mohammed Takori, a former member of the House of Representatives, has denounced the Vice President’s recent remarks about the Senate President election.
Vice President Shettima has stated that in the current regime, “the worst and most incompetent Southern Christian was better than the Northern Muslim in the Senate presidency.”
Takori viewed the remark as a deliberate attack on the North, particularly North West Senator-elect and former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari.
While denouncing the Vice President’s attitude, the former lawmaker promptly pushed him to withdraw his statement and apologize to the northerners.
“We felt aggrieved by this assertion as it comes directly from no other person but the Vice President who is our own, it was quite unfortunate,” he added
Takori, a lawyer, asked President Tinubu, a true democracy, to dismiss such attitude and enable free and fair competition in the chamber.
He reminded President Tinubu of his and other compatriots’ contributions to the current democratic dispensation’s survival.
“We are quite aware that President Tinubu is a true democrat, so he would never succumb to undemocratic posture, especially, in the election of National Assembly leadership,” he added.
Any attempt to prevent Yari from running for Senate President, he said, was a clear denial of the right of the entire northern people.
He urged senators-elect to oppose any act of imposition by the administration and to elect the leadership of their choosing, as this would ensure the parliament’s independence.
“As Senators-elect, don’t allow a stooge to lead the Senate if at all you want true democratic development to strive in the country,” he added.
