Nigeria Red Cross has called on citizens to imbibe and sustain the habit of volunteering their time, energy and resources for the service and development of the society.

The Branch Secretary, Nigeria Red Cross, Abia State, Mr. Ugwoeje Ugwunna, made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria at the occasion of 2021 International Volunteers Day, IVD which took place last weekend, 5th December 2021.

The theme of 2021 International Volunteers Day is “Volunteer now for our common future”.

The Branch Secretary, Mr. Ugwoeje Ugwunna said the day was set aside by the United Nation to celebrate millions of people around the world who had devoted themselves to the service of mankind in various capacities.

He urged those who had been doing so not to look back, noting that as an organization, the Red Cross had benefited from the volunteering disposition of such individuals in reaching vulnerable people in the society.

He pointed out that many volunteers had made immense contributions in meeting humanitarian needs during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, disaster response, armed conflicts and relief distribution.

Mr. Ugwunna therefore urged those who were still sitting on the fence to make their modest contribution to societal development by volunteering in any capacity that they can.
