Nigerian singer and songwriter, Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, professionally known as Wizkid emerged as one of the biggest winners at the 2021 African Music Awards.
The ‘Essence’ crooner was named the Best African Artiste of the year at the event which was held on Sunday night at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Wizkid grabbed three awards on the night but the biggest winner was Malian singer, Iba One who won 4 awards including; Album of the Year, African Male Artiste in Inspirational Music, Best Song Writer, and Best Male Artiste from Western Africa.
Nigerian singer, Fireboy DML also won two awards with the African Fans’ Favourite and Best Duo African Hip hop award alongside Cheque.
Wizkid cleared some of the biggest awards of the night, notably the Best African Artiste of the Year award.
Other awards he won include the Best Song of the Year for his global smash hit, ‘Essence’ with Tems, and the Best African Collaboration Award also with Tems.
He beat the likes of Burma Boy, Davido, South Africa’s Blaq Diamond, Diamond Platnumz (Tanzania), Fally Ipupa (DR Congo), Focalistic (South Africa), Makhadzi (South Africa), MHD (Guinea), Omah Lay (Nigeria) and Malian Aya Nakamura to clinch the highly contested Best Artiste of the Year award.
The show was hosted by Eddie Kadi and Pearl Thusi and witnessed performances from Patoranking, Chike, Olakira, D’Banj among others.
