A heavy downpour which came with a whirlwind on Monday blew off the roof of Eluama Amaiyi Nvosi primary school in Ehi-na-Uguru autonomous Community, Isialangwa South local government area of Abia state, ABN TV reports.

A substantial part of the building was also brought down completely, leaving the community devastated and confused.

This is in addition to hundreds said to have been rendered homeless in the community from the disaster which destroyed their houses.

ABN TV has some years ago published photos depicting the sorry states of the primary schools in Amaiyi and Ebeyi Nvosi as well as other communities in Isialangwa South which suffer undue neglect.

Our correspondent gathered that pupils and staff of the school had resumed their academic activities on Tuesday but were amazed to discover that there is no roof to study or teach under.

Electricity poles, as well as church buildings, were said to have been brought down in the heavy downpour.

Leaders of the community are therefore appealing to the local and state governments to come to their aid, insisting that they have nowhere to run to.
